Wayne StyersMay 5, 1923 ~ February 13, 2020 (age 96)
Wayne Styers, age 96, of Benton, KY passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at Lake Way Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Wayne was born on May 5, 1923 to the late Joe and Lennie Styers. He grew up in Benton, KY graduating from Benton High School in 1941. He loved the game of baseball and played shortstop for the local American Legion baseball team until he was 18 years of age.
Wayne moved to Detroit at 18 to work as a sheet metal fabricator, manufacturing aircraft wings in support of the war effort. While in Detroit, he met Liloene Goolsby and they were married in 1942. Shortly after they were married, Wayne was drafted into the Army and would be assigned to the Army Air Corp as a mechanic.
After the war they moved to southern California to start their family and to find work in the growing aerospace business. Wayne would spend most of his career at Hughes Aircraft Company where he retired in 1985.
Wayne remarried in 1984 to Darlene McGraw Styers and they relocated from California to Benton, KY in 1985 where they resided until his recent passing.
Wayne had a very warm, fun-loving personality and would always greet you with a smile. He was a kidder and enjoyed playing practical jokes on his family and friends. He also cherished his 1967 Ford Mustang which he kept in mint condition until having to part with it in recent years. He was a deacon for several years at the Church of Christ in Santa Ana, CA and worshipped at the local Church of Christ in Benton for many years.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Darlene McGraw Styers; two daughters, Tami Crowe of Little Rock, Arkansas and Tanya Traeger of St. Paul, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Jennifer Wilson, Ryan Crowe, Travis Crowe and Christopher Traeger; two great granddaughters, Olivia Wilson and Autumn Wilson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Blaine Styers.
The family would like to recognize and thank Jerry and Juanita Sells from Benton for their special friendship, love and care that they have provided to Wayne and Darlene over the years. Also, the family would like to extend special thanks to the nurses, aides and staff at Lake Way.
